Lecture questions 4/29

1. Do you think that your answers are similar or different from most Americans? In what ways are they similar, and different?
I think they are similar due to the fact that it was mainly option based and for a lot of the questions there were only four choices or less.

2. Which questions do you think would be the most helpful if one was using market research to design new paintings for sale? What questions would you ask differently, or leave out entirely?
LIKE: When you select pictures, photographs, or other pieces of art for your home, do you find you lean more toward modern or more toward traditional styles, In general, would you rather see paintings of outdoor scenes or would you rather see paintings of indoor scenes?", Do you tend to prefer paintings that are related to religion or those that are not related to religion?, Every color has a wide range of shades. Take the color blue, for example. An artist can use a bright, vibrant shade of blue, like a royal blue, a pale, muted shade of blue, like light blue, or a darker tone of blue, like dark or midnight blue. In general, which would you say that you prefer? when the artist uses more vibrant shades, paler shades, or darker shades of color?"
Leave out: Which patterns do you like better: geometric patterns or more random uneven patterns?, Do you prefer paintings that exaggerate the dimensions or reality of objects we already know, or ones that feature imaginary objects which have no connection to everyday life?

3. Would this work? Why or why not?
I believe it would work because the general public who buys art may not know all the intricate techniques and methods for the paintings, its best to leave the questions to a more general form.

SRL lecture

I believe looking at the work of the Survival Research Laboratories as fantasy is a pretty easy task. I feel that it fulfills the fantasy of the future. It is common for man to ponder about the future and what it will bring us. Most people I asked about what the future looked like, all replied with the same answer, Robots. Survival Research Laboratories creates these robotic machines to carry out certain functions for each performance they display to the public. Most people enjoy watching these performances, probably because of the fantasy of the future being brought to life before their eyes. Their performances are not pleasing just to the fantasy of the future and what it may bring, but for the fantasy of destruction as well. These machines during the performances destroy things such as building like structures, cars, etc. Some may not consider destruction as a fantasy, but to some it is. It is a fantasy as what it would be like to see especially from a robotic like machine.
The Jetsons, created in the very early 1960’s by the Hanna Barbera Company, a cartoon depicting how the world will look in the future. Everyone has their own opinions though about how the future will look like. If you compare the nice subtle futuristic idea the Jetsons showed us to the destructive nature of the terminator, you will see a big difference. I feel that the Survival Research Laboratories is giving us a realization of what the future could actually bring in a more believable manner. Whenever a person depicted the future, they use animation of some sort to make the idea function, but the Survival Research Laboratories actually makes the pieces move or carry out the functions they were designed for. There are some similarities though between the “mainstream” idea of robots and the Survival Research Laboratories robots. The main similarity would probably be the movement of the figure. The way a machine moves is often used as an expression of movement, for example the dance “The Robot”, the expression “walking like a robot”, and even “robotic movements”. Of course not all robots though can walk, some of Survival Research Laboratories machines actually move by wheels, somewhat like the Jetsons “Rosie”.
I believe the robots of Survival Research Laboratories are actually a warning. Maybe they are trying to warn us of the destructive nature of the future. How we keep advancing in technology and these simple machines cause so much damage, imagine how much more damage a more advanced robot could do. I can see how protesters would label the Survival Research Laboratories as “Yanks with Tanks”, because their creations are destructive, and tanks are used for destruction, and are often referred to as a machine instead of a vehicle.
Humans are the audience because of the fact that we love destruction. It is human nature to be fascinated with at least one form of destruction rather it be emotional, physical, self, psychological, etc. So we go and watch this display of destruction, but it’s the fact that its not man we are watching, but its creations. I feel they Chose Amsterdam because of the fact that we still went to war with Afghanistan. That is all we need is to do an art performance, people assume its new military weaponry, and then another war breaks loose because of a mistake.

One word Crit

The one word preformance i felt was my best preformance yet. I came on to the stage angry because of the lack of tips given to me from my previous location. On this new scene in front of all these people I began to play my accordion and softly ask for tips, just looking around. as the time passed no one was giving me tips, so my voice became more desperate and i began to get closer to the crowd asking for tips.....still no tips. Now the stomach pain has setteled in and i fell to my knees crying tips. SOme of the things I heard about the preformance from others: Casey stated that it felt realistic because as i became despereate and i got closer and closer to the people no one would make eye contact with me, and thats how its like in real life. Kathy felt that maybe another word would have made the piece stronger, such as poverty. A few of the people in Class, Such as Donnovan, Shelby, and kathy, Were inches away from actually giving me a tip. A lot of the people in class was also supprised i can play accordion. Just FYI for anyone who wants to know that type of accordion is known as a 7 key Squeeze box accordion.

Crit for color Project

For the color project i felt that i did pretty good, not amazing, or excellent, but pretty good. I was appart of Val's group. I heard Kathys group said what they felt their grade should be, i would have given myself a B or a B-. The only problems my piece had that others had to say was how on the 6x6 dot piece you can see the masonite quiet a bit. for both the 6x6 and the first 12x12 the framing was very "Wonky", i could have done much better with the framing. Other than that the only thing that was repeated was how they couldnt really tell what my piece was until i said WOlf then they waid it all came together.

Inflatable Proposals

The Proposal I came up with for The Inflatable project was to create a huge abstract figure that went from the bottom of the Ferrington Pit all the way to the top allowing students standing at different levels in the pit to walk under and see the "belly" of the object while people outside of the pit can see the top of the figure.

body as gender (working on new ones)

My 7 Proposals

I looked back at my previous pieces and had troubles trying to figure out what exactly i wanted to do for my final piece in WASH. Then it kind of hit me as i was looking at certain ones. Here are my ideas:

1). For the uncomfortable video I used lighting and a dustmask to hide myself in the dark and breath heavily, Due to peramiters of the project I couldn't do what i really wanted to do with the video. So for this idea I was thinking of taking the original clip, and doing some video editing to it. Maybe taking the same video file, duplicating it, putting it over the same video but more off center and transperant. then when the darkness comes in I zoom in closer to the face. Oh yeah, instead of having the audio play normally I plan on reversing the audio and maybe some other effects to like a slight echo.

2).The next idea i had was relating back to the modular madness project. The peramiters stated that the piece had to be non-representational, takes up body volume, etc. Well I was actually thinking of using Playing cards once again but making a representational object blown up out of proportion. But the question i came up to now was, what was i going to make. Well i wanted to make something that delt with cards and the main things that came to my mind was Casinos (las Vegas), Magicians, and Alice in wonderland. So i thought that doing a more fictional based piece would be more fun. Like actually make one of the card soldiers out of cards. If i do not go for that idea i may use the cards to make a Magicians hat and the cards spewing out of it with a stuffed rabbit in the middle.

3).Markmaking intrigued me more than what i thought it would when we did the exercises in class. Well every idea i came up with for the markmaking project was representational to an extent, so i think if i were to go with markmaking I will probably create a piece where you can actually make out images using markmaking. To boost the contrast of the piece of thinking of only using Black, White, and Red. I was thinking of doing a a sillouette of a man that is being burdened with all his problems at once.

4). Looking back at what i can remember of how i did preformance wise i felt that i could have done a lot better. The preformance i think i did the best on was the One word preformance. For that one i used my accordion and said the word "tips" as the minute went on i became more desperate as the tips where going to buy me food to keep me alive. Well I felt that tips was an appropriate word for the play but maybe a different word would have been more effective. Like Poverty, Starving, Famished, Suffering. SO i had the idea of redoing this preformance and instead of using one word using four words; Tips, Starving, Suffering, Dying.

5). Mapping project for Lecture was fun, I enjoyed making a game out of it. But that wasnt the original idea i actually had. The original idea i actually had for the piece was creating a sculpture of my back maybe out of paper mache and then drawing the road map of my life down it. WHy the back though right? well my back has been injured the most of my body, Ive had scoliosis for many years, and i never stop those problems from stopping me doing what cant be done with those injuries. So the map would actually be leading from me finding out about my back problem, to all the injuries and the times ive been told i cant do something cause of my back but i did it anyways.

6).The recent color project was enjoyable for me becuase of how i acutally like working with Confeti and this project was pretty similar to it. I would redo this project and go beyond what we did. I would do my style of confetti and create a series to go with it. It will be one picture; A smiling face in the middle, sideways angry face comming off of one side of the smiling face, and sad face on the adjacent side. Each face will be colored in based upon their emotion. and i was thinking of doing this on something bigger like maybe a four by four or a five by five or bigger.

7).a farewell speach as my monolouge

Color Project Picture ideas.

Metaphore

For my Metaphore project I chose the metaphore "Turning nothing into something", by doing this i had an empty trash can with three holes drilled on the sides, and stuff coming out of each hole. As the stuff came out of the holes it went from being messy and looking trashy to nice, neat, and SOMETHING. lol. I chose this metaphore because my family has been dumpster diving for as long as i remember and it just came to me on how people throw away stuff because to them it's nothing, But to us it was something. Everything I used in the project was rather being thrown out by someone or already in the dumpster.

Mapping Project (GRADE ME)!

For my mapping project I decided to do a gameboard about my school life. But instead of puting my life on the game board, making it ordered, i decided to do how my school life really was, random. The board is divided up between four sections; Elementary, Intermediate, Middle, and High school. In each section there are three main spaces; Good, bad, and Allowence. There are cards that go with each section along with playing pieces and Dice. The Cards for the game match the three main squares; good, bad, and allowence. Each card has something different on it that relates to the type of card and the school your in. I decided to do it this way because my school life was never ordered, some days i would constantly get in trouble and other days i was being honored for something. So this game is based on the same thing my school life was based on, luck.

Lecture Homework

Reverend Ethan Acres resides in two main worlds, the world of art and religion. But as I read and look at his pieces online, he, in my opinion has made religion into an art. I do consider what he does as art, because to me art is a freedom of expression, and he is expressing himself. Art is not necessary a visual experience, but the visual art does not have to be like the others. In one sermon he appeared before his listeners as a representation of a character from a show. He did not do this just for fun, and is that not what art does, express meaning. If you look at some of his “regular” art, you may have trouble finding the meaning. Like I have stated before, his main concentration in his art is religion of the Christian faith. So we can automatically assume that each piece of “regular” art has some sort of religious meaning behind it. When he was asked about some of his pieces, he would refer to a verse in the bible that relates with that piece. So in a way he is actually visually, and possibly mentally, preaching to you. When I first saw some of his pieces, I could not really come up with a logical meaning behind it, until I found out his main focus is religion. After I had learned this, it was easier to find the meanings. Also when viewing a multitude of his pieces at once, I felt like I was in a church for Christian artist’s and this was the sermon. So many lessons and preaching’s flowed through me head with every picture. The best part about his work in my opinion is that he is serious about his work. He has not only put his heart and soul into his work, but he has put in something else most humans cherish, our choice and beliefs of our chosen religion. Most pieces by today’s “top” artist usually do not cover the topic of religion. If rev. Acres were around the time of the Renaissance and he did the art that he does today, he probably would be seen as a blasphamist. I say this because almost every single piece was about religion had to have religious symbols or was made to act out famous stories from the bible. As for rev. Acres, to me his pieces are more representational and symbolic. He does not use vivid hints in his piece; he in a way hides his messages in a unique way. If you were to compare Reverend Acre’s pieces to mine, you probably will not see much in common. As for most of my pieces are very basic and geared toward a more realistic look, but as for him his pieces sometimes has a lot going on in it, the colors may be over exaturated, and/or they may be more surrealistic. His art is unlike anything I have seen from one person. He has a variety of “looks and styles” to his pieces. Usually artist’s have one distinct look but he does not, all his pieces have different looks.

Story (revised)

besides the colors described, and a few wording, this is a REAL journal entry I wrote before I found out I had psychosis...

April 13th, 2010,
6:15 A.M.
It is happening again. I woke up to the sound of laughter coming from outside my door, but when I go to check, the hallway is empty. I asked myself if Larry forgot to turn off his T.V., and unfortunately, it was off. What is happening to me? I will worry about that later; I have to get ready for school...
2:15 P.M.
Good, they brought it. I am now in Mrs. Sweet’s class; I finally have time to write in you. You know journal, you are starting to become a burden on me. I do not know why mom wants me to write in you, but oh well. After this morning everything was going fine, until the bell rang for the end of the first class. After it did, the hallway was filled with the multicolored shirts being worn by kids walking slowly with friends, trying not to get to class too early. As I attempted to zigzag through the people I noticed a guy standing outside my classroom door, his shirt was a deep but majestic looking purple. I stopped instantly and focused on him. It was not too long before Higgy had came up to me and smacked me across the head asking why am I not moving. I turned and looked at him, then back at where the man was, but he was gone. I asked Higgy if he saw the man, and of course Higgy replied laughing, "Nope but if you do, let me know. We're bringing him down". I rolled my eyes and went on to class. As the bells kept ringing throughout the day I kept searching the hallways for that purple shirted figure, no luck. I began to draw what I thought his face looked like but I wasn't too sure. Lunch was when I really freaked out. After me and Higgy ran to the lunch lines, got our food, snacks, and drinks, we headed to our table and sat down. A few other friends were already there with their blue and red lunch kits. I began the conversations like usual, until I saw the flash of purple out of the corner of my eye. This time he was walking down towards one of the hallways leaving the cafeteria. He motioned with his head for me to follow him, so I stood up from the table and told them I had to piss I will be back. I followed him all the way to the restrooms down the Hornet green Senior English Hallway, which was usually empty because of how the janitors gave up on it a long time ago. When I entered I looked around to see where he was. He cannot be hiding in one of the stalls, the walls were torn down and the doors would not shut, but those would be the only hiding spots someone would use in bathrooms. I walked around the bathroom looking at every off white corner, every broken tile, and even every sharpie graffiti mark. I found nothing of use. Before I left, I used the sink real quick to wash my hands and my face. After I had splashed the cold yet refreshing clear water on to my face, I looked into the mirror to find the man was standing right where I was. Before I could say anything he had put his right pointer finger to his lips, telling me to be quiet. I backed away slowly, not because of the man is in the mirror, but because of his face. I do not know how to describe it, every time I think about it keep getting even more paranoid. I'll draw it later. I soon took off running out the restroom to find that lunch has ended and everyone is on their way to class. I walk right across the hall to my next class Mrs. Sweet, and now I am where I started. Oh, when I said "Good, they brought it", Higgy and Sunny brought my worn black school bag from lunch to this class trying to find me, but took off early because their class is on the opposite side of the building. Got to go for now.
11:31 P.M.
Before I head back to bed I guess I will take the time out to finish the day. All during Sweet's class I could not concentrate on writing, all I could think about was the man with the purple shirt in the mirror. The more I thought about him, the louder the room got. The strange thing was, no one was talking, not even the teacher. It was hard to understand what the voices were saying, except for one. He kept pointing out people in the class that were nearby that I could "take out" quickly and quietly, but the worst part was he was telling me what objects around me I could use and showed me what it would look like. I asked if I could step outside to call my dad, and she said yes. I asked if he could pick me up, I do not feel safe at school anymore. He came about 15 minutes later and took me home. I fell asleep on the ride home, but I woke up just now and I am in my bed. Have I really lost it? Have I crossed this fine line of insanity? Have I? The room is silent, I should try and sleep before I get myself worked up again. Good night.

Human Dots

For the human dot/square project my table decided to do dots and we came up with a lot of ideas of how we could possibly do this project. we thought of using clothing, cutting dots out of cardboard and holding them, even filling a pool with milk and float in inner tubes. But the idea we enjoyed the most was painting our hands and placing black spheres on top of them... here are my Human dots

modular madness crit insights

After giving my presentation I had a few people give me their opinions on my piece for instance one person did not see why I placed the face cards separate from the other cards but Maggie's response answered it. Maggie said that there aren't that many face cards in a deck of cards so she thought it was cool how i separated the face cards from the number cards.

6...ACI

When the class started today we had brought our 3d projects in and sat them down at the back of the building to wait for the second part of the day. We brought the dot project back so that we may continue on them. I stood up and walked around to try and get an idea of what to do to my piece. No original ideas came to mind. So I sat back down and continued to work on my piece. Meanwhile Vallerie was walking around making sure every had brought their 3d structure for this afternoon.
LUNCH
American Cardboard Idol
We all sat down in a circular formation around the "judges table". The judges where Kathy, Vallerie, and Tony Shipp (as the guest judge and Simon Cowell). Each person would go up and spend about a minute preforming for the judges, then the judges would score them....Tony rarely gave 5's, even 4's were hard to find him holding up. When I came out I had to improvise because the original handle had broken off, so i did a different preformance. I got two 2's and one 1 as my score. I agreed completely with what they said. Finishing watching everyone do their presentations i got lost in thought of what i should have done to improve my score.
